Had my CIP today w/ class 4A (:
Also, its our last day of camp success!
And my group emerged as 3rd among the 4Exp & 5Na classes! *whoooooo*!
Alright, back to CIP.
We went to this old folks home nearby Sembawang Shopping Centre.
Split up into groups of 12.
My group was me, Chloe, Nicole, HweeTing, Marilyn, JiaHui, Dylan, GuoSheng, Shawn, QingHao, Nehemiah, Maurice and Yongjun :D
Gunin was our photographer for the day!
When we reached there, we had a group photo (:
Then we were lead to different locations where we are supposed to interact w/ the elderly there till their lunch time- 4pm
My group was lead to the Dimentia ward.
Those elderlies there were suffering from Dimentia.
When we stepped into the ward, elderlies were sitting together and STARING INTO SPACE
They weren't doing anything at all. Just... slacking and waiting for time to pass.
There was an old lady who was watching TV. Channel 5. And she doesnt even understands english!
It was awkward initially.
I mean, there is this HUGE age gap, and we really didn know how to approach them plus there was also another HUGE barrier- language. Most of them there speaks Hokkien.
Altho im a Hokkien, i dont understand a single word of it let alone speak!
But i could communicate a lil w/ Cantonese and Malay.
Those super basics luhh...
We played ball games, talk to them, helped them move around.
There was an old lady who painted her nails!
See! No matter how old, a girl will always try to look pretty! (:
But of course, there's this 'evil' side too!
i dont exactly know what happened but Aunty A sudd hit Aunty B and they quarrelled.
O__O yupp, given their age (70++), they quarrelled and fought.
i guess there was alot of differences.
Then, some of those more hot tempered ones or grumpy ones were seperated into a random corner where they stare into space again... most of them couldn walk and were in wheelchairs so they were pratically almost inmobile w/o help.
Some of them were so desperate to be able to stand again/ stubborn and doesnt want help that they lied to us.
There was a aunty who told me she was feeling guiddy and needed medicine.
I told the nurse but nurse told me that th aunty says that all day long but in fact, she's lying.
Another aunty was that she untied one of her cloth that was tied around her to prevent her from leaving her wheelchair. She asked me and chloe to help her untie cuz she wanted to use th loo.
After untying, i asked her if she needed my help to push and she said no, she wanted to walk.
But after her second step, she fell backwards and i hold onto her.
Got the nurse to help and she told me that this aunty's leg cant support her anymore.
Thats why she was tied up.
As soon as the nurses appeared to tie her back to the wheelchair, her attitude changed and she became agitated.
The aunty was tied back to the wheelchair again and she was saying:
" Dont do this!"
Its so heartwrenching to hear that.
Then, she was pushed to a corner far away from everyone and her wheelchair was tied to a wooden beam so she wouldn attempt to move around.
And she said something like:
"Why . . . ?"
It just affected some of our mood's so much.
And its really depressing to watch.
Imagine, everyday you wake up, no idea where you are, where your families are, who are these people and why are you not given the freedom to walk.
Its horrible.
But also, there was some really hyper ones and even cute ones!
This chinese aunty participated actively in our mini ball game and even played piano for us even though it was just random smacking of those keys.
But we applauded for her and there was this huge bright smile on her face (:
Also, Nehemiah sang "wo meng tin" (Hokkien song) and all the elderlies cheered up instantly!
There was also this malay aunty who tried teaching Chloe and Nicole malay no. from 1-10
And everytime they got it wrong, she had this grumpy look but it was for fun(:
She was really cute in her actions and all! Very lovable(:
I guess she's the only alert one in th whole ward because she warned me about some of the other aunties. & it was true that those aunties were of those bad tempered ones!
Her bed, among the whole ward, was the most eye catching one.
know why? :D
Cuz there was Mickey mouse etc and cartoon bedsheets for her bed plus photographs around.
others had white bed sheets, flasks and towel only.
Unfortunately, it was time to go.
In fact, even before th time was up, some of them were already asking us whether are we leaving soon.
We said yes and they would lapse into a lil min of silence of just became a lil quieter.
Although we had difficulties in understanding due to language barrier,
we still went along great (:
It was really heart breaking to tell them that we have to go.
The first thing they asked was:
"Will you guys come back again?"
All they want is company.
But even we could not promise anything.
So we said no . . .
Parting was hard.
Especially for Chloe who bonded so well w/ th malay aunty.
They took photos and the malay lady even made Chloe sit on her lap.
Yep, thats how close they are!
So, we baded bye and left.
Once out of the ward, Chloe started crying. Kaiwen cried too.
The old man Kaiwen was interacting w/ was thanking them for coming.
It was evident that he had difficulty in speech but he was so happy their presence he talked really fast and thanked them loads.
It was really touching... and heart breaking.
Of course, we hope to go back and visit them again.
Maybe they will forget us.
Maybe they might be gone from the world even before we know.
But as long as they're still here, they need company.
No matter how beautiful, how big and spacious an old folks home is,
the loneliness they face is overbearing.
I hope i'll get to see them again somedday soon.
It was a good day (:
Dimentia doesnt change the person they are inside.
Watch this video if you want(:
'm sure most of us would have alrdy seen it,
but nevertheless, its really touching.
After that, me and Qing head over to SSC's Aston for...dinner-lunch?
After that, we went to the children playground to play! :D
I played more than him... :X
SO WHAT IF I OLDER? :B
it was fun to just fool around!
even tho the playground had a board saying "For children under 12"
Aiyo! But who cares!
He sent me to Yishun Int and headed home himself(:
Sorry for the wordy post.
If you read every word, youre amazing (:
Hate it when i avoid a scene and it slaps me in my face whenever i go onto social networking sites where pictures hooks those memories back again.
Because this was exactly what happened.
Anyway!
Other photos~ (:
And... MRS NG!
More photos on FB! :D
